In June 2015, Montgomery County Community College said an emotional goodbye to its President of 14 years, Dr. Karen A. Stout, and the institution’s alumni magazine, bigDreams, sought to give her an appropriate send off.
As one of Dr. Stout’s primary writers during her presidency, I was charged with telling the story of her leadership. During a four-month process, I interviewed faculty, staff, current and former students, the Board of Trustees chairman, and Dr. Stout herself. In addition to writing the story, I gathered photos and built a timeline of accomplishments.
The piece was published as the nine-page cover story in the Summer 2015 issue of bigDreams, the alumni magazine of Montgomery County Community College. To date, it is the longest journalistic-style piece of work in my portfolio.
