On Tuesday, Jan. 17, John Welsh and I will screen and discuss our short film on Pennsylvania mine fires at 7 p.m. in Ashley, Pa. as part of a presentation titled “Anthracite Region Mine Fires: Exploring One of the Hidden Costs of Mining.” The public event is sponsored by the Huber Breaker Preservation Society.
As many as 80 mine fires are actively burning in Pennsylvania — a little known fact we learned while working on our documentary film “Beyond The Breaker” (in progress). The mine fire short (title TBD) explores the sites of several active fires, including Centralia, Shamokin, Carbondale, Eynon, and Laurel Run.
